The latest Korean skincare trend is ‘SHOT’ (micro-needling ‘style’ skincare product), and well-known & dermo Korean cosmetic brands such as VT, Dr.G and Isntree etc, released new skincare ranges named *** Shot. These are actually spicule-containing skincare products to promote absorption of active ingredients into the skin and improve skin cell turnover cycle.
🧷What is Spicules?
Spicules are microscopic needle-like structures that are derived from marine sponges. They are composed of either Calcium or Silica, and come in different shapes and sizes – naturally pointy and spiky in shape.
In skincare they act like non-abrasive exfoliators to remove dead skin cells and create micro-channels in the stratum corneum (the outer layer of epidermis) to deliver active ingredients deep into the skin, helping the absorption of following skincare products.

As a part of your evening skin care routine, apply a proper amount on a clean face and gently spread with your fingers. Follow with a serum, cream or masks.
(can be applied it with a hydrating toner – use spicule product on cleansed & toned face: after using a toner)
👉 Spicules should work with most ingredients, but those with sensitive skin may want to alternate days with powerful active ingredients such as vitamin C concentrate or retinol. Not recommended to use with any beauty device and after laser treatment.
👉 Smooth over the face & neck, then gently press down with your palm to aid absorption rather than massage into the skin.
🧷What Is VT Reedle Shot 100 Essence?
A face serum, containing CICA REEDLE™ – physical derma delivery system mechanism with spicules, made of silica that gently stimulates the skin to promote the absorption of active ingredients and helps refine rough skin texture – the spicules in a serum easily penetrate through the pores of the skin and manually slough off dead skin cells to reveal smoother, brighter skin.
👉 Vt Reedle Shot is not the first spicule skincare product, however it gained a fame as a most recognizable spicule product since it sold more than millions at Daiso (low-end product version) and big retail stores such as Oliveyoung as well as VT online site.

*Line Up & Texture
It comes in 5 types of serum by strength – Reedle Shot 50, 100, 300, 700 & 1000 and as the number grows the strength increases. The formula/ texture is also more concentrated and thicker in Reedle Shot 1000.
When I apply and massage into skin, I feel like tiny needles in my skin – Reedle Shot 300 has more stinging to me than 100 as you can expect: 300 contains 3 times more spicules than 100, and sometimes those tingling stays on the next day. Actually Spicules take up to 48~72hrs till fully dissolve, so you may feel a prickling sensation when you touch your skin during this time, however they are all natural and no side-effects. If you worry about touching sensitive areas such as eyes, just wash your hands or rinsing off your eyes if touched.
*How to use Reedle Shot series?
Reedle shot 50~100 can be used daily, and do not recommend to combine with any other higher strength serum 300 or 700 at the same time – can be fit in 300 on the 3rd day or 700 on the 7th day – well, the company advise like this and I have tried Shot 300 on the 3rd day and there was no harm or side effect.
Those for sensitive skin may start Shot 50 for 2~3 times a week and increase frequency as your skin adopts. Other strengths need to be patch tested first.
🧷Conclusion
VT Reedle shot is more than a serum, it’s a booster (prepping skin to absorb following serum or cream), serum (contains Adenosine, Niacinamide & Cica) and gentle exfoliator (remove dead skin cells). Quite a positive result to me is helping remove dead skin cells, softening my skin so I can see a bit brighter & smoother skin next morning. When I increased numbers like VT Reedle Shot 300, it caused skin to peel off around the nose area (similar to high-strength retinol application) however it wasn’t harsh to my skin so I continued using every 3~4 days as the manufacturer recommended.
👉 My Tip! Combine with Reedle SHot 300 or 700 Mask Kit – it comes with a serum & mask sheet – every 3rd day or once a week with your Reedle Shot 100 daily routine. Once finished a Reedle Shot 100 then increase strength as your skin builds tolerance.
(*Mask sheet contains abundant essence so use with a tool like above to aid absorption with cooling effect)
Following product can be vary depends on your skin condition, and I have used with IOPE PDRN serum which has proven to improve pigmentation and helps improve skin quality & vitality, and Koy Lifting Wrapping Cream that improves skin elasticity & firmness – Both improved my skin condition a lot.
Applying with other VT serums such as Reti-A series for pore & lifting, and PDRN serum for wrinkle-improvement & enhancing skin’s natural radiance are also recommended.
